Townships are a space of innovation like no other. The proactive nature and DIY attitude of commercial stakeholders should be respected and supported. However, these modi operandi often come from places of survival, where competition is tight and capital even tighter – they should not be glamourised. Unfortunately, the problem with unregulated and informal economies is that there is disorder. With no regulating authority or developmental strategy, not everyone can win and as a rule of thumb, the pedestrian commuter, part of the general public, comes last. Series # 7, written by Ashleigh Killa, focuses on the social-spatial systems of the township economy on Philippi’s high street: Amsterdam Street and Ingulube Road.
