Kayla’s core interest relates to the spatial transformation of South African cities. Through her Masters in Architecture from the University of Cape Town, she explored issues of affordable housing in the post-apartheid settlement of Delft South. Her thesis dealt with the intersection between issues of housing density, informality, economy, agency and place-making. While her qualification is in architecture, she is also drawn to the fields of urban design, urban geography and city planning. Previously, Kayla has worked on architecture projects in Cape Town, Brazil and Edinburgh and joined the Sustainable Livelihoods Team in 2017.
