The Facebook Virtual Imbizo was an initiative used to foster discussions, share updates, and encourage participation in economic development efforts across five township sites: Delft, New Brighton, Pinetown South, Thembisa, and Hammanskraal.
The Virtual Imbizo successfully facilitated community discussions on topics like entrepreneurship, public safety, and infrastructure, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. It enhanced digital participation, with strong engagement in Delft and Hammanskraal. However, challenges included limited municipal involvement, digital access issues due to data costs and connectivity, and competition from existing community groups. The initiative highlighted the need for stronger local government partnerships and tailored strategies to sustain participation.
As the TED Project concludes, the Delft Virtual Imbizo will be handed over to a community-based organisation, while other sites will be archived. The Virtual Imbizo model offers a valuable blueprint for digital community engagement, demonstrating how technology can support urban development and local economic growth.
